Technical advice, Dublin workshop support & Irish road regulations
Road legal electric scooters in Ireland
Shop Irish-spec electric scooters selected for Ireland's public-road rules. This collection focuses on 20 km/h electric scooters with no more than 400W continuous rated motor power and a net weight of 25 kg or less. Lifty Electric provides clear specifications, Dublin showroom support, workshop servicing and nationwide delivery.
What makes an electric scooter road legal in Ireland?
Under S.I. No. 199/2024, a road-legal e-scooter used in a public place must meet all applicable technical requirements, including:
- maximum design speed of 20 km/h
- maximum continuous rated motor power of 400W
- maximum net weight of 25 kg, including the battery
- wheels at least 200 mm in diameter
- a standing platform and no seat
- front and rear lights, reflectors, brakes and an audible warning device
- a manufacturer's plate showing power, weight and design speed
- CE marking and the appropriate Declaration of Conformity
A 20 km/h speed limiter alone does not make a powerful or overweight scooter road legal. Always check the exact model, variant, manufacturer's plate and documentation supplied. Lifty does not describe a scooter as suitable for Irish public-road use solely because its speed has been restricted.
Irish e-scooter rules for riders
Under the rules currently in force, riders must be at least 16, ride on the left and obey traffic signals. Compliant e-scooters may use cycle lanes, bus lanes and permitted roads, but not footpaths, pedestrianised areas or motorways. Passengers, goods and handheld mobile-phone use are prohibited. No driving licence, motor tax or insurance is required for an e-scooter that fully qualifies as a Powered Personal Transporter.
Important 2026 regulation update
In July 2026 the Government announced plans to raise the minimum riding age to 18 and introduce mandatory helmets and high-visibility clothing. These announced changes should not be treated as law until the relevant regulations are formally commenced. Check the latest Department of Transport guidance and RSA e-scooter rules before riding.
