Find the right electric bike for your route.
The best electric bike for your Irish commute depends on your route, storage and total budget. Use these four starting points to narrow the range before comparing individual models.
Daily city journeys
Compare an upright riding position, step-through access, mudguards, lights and rack compatibility. Check the complete return distance with a battery reserve.
Compare commuter e-bikesLimited storage
Compare actual bike weight and folded dimensions with your stairs, doorway and storage space. A folding frame does not automatically mean a light bike.
Compare folding e-bikesFamily trips and heavier loads
Check total permitted load, compatible passenger equipment, parking space and braking. Confirm that the exact model qualifies as a cargo bike before relying on a scheme limit.
Compare cargo e-bikesHills and longer journeys
Compare torque, gearing and battery watt-hours together. Manufacturer maximum range is not a guarantee for your route, load or Irish winter conditions.
Browse the full rangeBuying through your employer? Start with e-bikes under €1,500 or read the Bike to Work guide. Include safety equipment, delivery and any preparation charges when comparing the total quotation. Check the size guide and ask the Capel Street team about model availability and workshop support.
Choose for your actual journey
Compare e-bikes for a Dublin commute.
Start with the complete return journey, the place you will keep the bike and the load you need to carry. A 6 km journey each way means 12 km between home charges; a 16 km journey means 32 km. Those are distance examples, not battery-range promises. Allow for hills, wind, cold weather and the assistance level you use.
| Your priority | A useful starting point | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Daily city commuting | Fiido C11 Pro and city and commuter e-bikes | Riding position, step-through access, secure parking and the full return route. |
| A smaller storage footprint | UTO OG16 and folding electric bikes | Actual weight, folded dimensions and carrying access. UTO e-bikes are collection-only. |
| Cargo or family equipment | Fiido T2 Longtail and cargo e-bikes | Total permitted load, compatible carrying accessories and parking space; ask about the exact configuration. |
| Bosch-powered commuting or touring | CUBE electric bikes | The exact motor, battery, frame size and equipment on the selected model. |
These are specification-based starting points, not a head-to-head road test. Product pages show current prices, variants and availability. Confirm stock and the exact configuration before your employer places an order.
Buying through work? Use our Bike to Work Scheme calculator and employer quote tools. HSE staff should also check the HSE application and supplier requirements. Compare the manufacturer's measurements with our electric bike size guide; in-person sizing consultations are not offered.

Before you buy
Six questions that matter.
Skip the spec-sheet noise. These are the checks our workshop team runs with every customer.
How far is the return journey?
Advertised range rarely matches real routes. Budget for hills, wind, cold and a sensible reserve.
Where will it be stored?
Weight and folded dimensions matter in apartments and offices. Check battery removal and charging space.
Does the bike fit?
Reach, saddle range and step-over height affect comfort. Compare the manufacturer's geometry and rider-height guidance before choosing a size.
Is the route hilly or loaded?
Judge motor tuning, torque, gearing and brake capacity — not watts alone.
Can it be serviced?
E-bikes need mechanical and electrical care. Confirm parts, warranty route and workshop access.
Is it Irish-road legal?
Verify the exact supplied configuration — power, cut-off and throttle behaviour — not the model name.
Irish regulations
What counts as a road-legal e-bike.
A standard pedelec must not exceed a 250W continuous rated motor.
Assistance stops when pedalling stops or 25 km/h is reached. Treated like a bicycle.
More powerful or throttle-equipped models can fall into e-moped categories. Always confirm the exact supplied configuration.
Bike to Work Scheme
Save up to 52% through your employer.
Your employer purchases the bike and safety equipment; you repay through gross salary. The employer must buy the package — personal purchases don't qualify. Once in any four-year period; savings depend on your tax rate.

FAQ
Answers, no fine print.
What is the best e-bike for commuting in Ireland?
One that fits, covers your return route with reserve, stops dependably and stores securely. A low-step city bike suits frequent stops; a folder suits mixed transport.
Do I need a licence, tax or insurance?
A standard 250W pedelec cutting off at 25 km/h is treated like a bicycle. More powerful or motor-only machines can fall into e-moped categories. Optional theft insurance is still worthwhile.
Can I buy an e-bike over €1,500 through Bike to Work?
Employers may spend above the limit, but Revenue states the excess is taxable. Confirm the arrangement before ordering. The €3,000 limit applies only to purpose-built cargo bikes.
How often can I use the scheme?
Once every four years. The tax year in which the bicycle is provided counts as the first year.
Can I see an e-bike in Dublin?
Contact the Capel Street team before travelling to confirm which models are available to view. Compare the manufacturer's geometry and rider-height guidance using our size guide.
Does Lifty deliver across Ireland?
Nationwide delivery is available on eligible products. Timing and final assembly vary by model, so confirm before purchasing.
How do I choose the right size?
Start with manufacturer geometry and rider-height guidance, then check reach, saddle range and step-over height. Our size guide has the detail.
Are e-bikes waterproof?
No bike should be treated as waterproof unless the manufacturer states a certified rating. Never immerse or pressure-wash; dry electrical areas after wet rides.
