Best Helmets and Hi-Vis Gear for Electric Scooter Riders
Do e-scooter riders need helmets?
Irish e-scooter users must wear a securely fastened helmet and securely fastened high-visibility clothing covering the front and back of the torso. The RSA states that these requirements took effect on 4 September 2026. They apply alongside the vehicle and road-use rules.
What to choose
- A properly fitted helmet.
- Securely fastened high-visibility clothing covering the front and back of the torso.
- Bright front and rear lighting.
- Reflective details on bags or clothing.
Shop Electric Scooter Helmets Ireland and compare safety-focused scooters in Regulations Ready Electric Scooters. Official safety guidance is available from the RSA.
Fit before features
Try the helmet and use its manufacturer's fitting instructions: it should sit correctly, remain stable and fasten securely. Check the intended use and certification of the exact helmet. Decorative lighting or a dramatic visor does not compensate for poor fit.
Hi-vis needs to be visible
For Irish e-scooter use, required hi-vis clothing must be securely fastened and cover the front and back of the torso. Check that a bag or coat does not defeat that purpose. Reflective trim alone should not be assumed to satisfy the clothing requirement. Inspect helmet damage and follow replacement guidance after an impact. The useful kit is the kit that fits and gets worn on the ordinary trip to work.
