Bike to Work Scheme Renewal: Four Tax Years, Records and Your Next Bike
LIFTY ELECTRIC · IRELAND · UPDATED 14 OCTOBER 2026
Your old commuter has served through several winters. Before shopping for its replacement, find out when you last used the Cycle to Work exemption. The calendar matters more than the condition of your chain.
Count tax years rather than months
Revenue counts the year the bicycle was provided as year one. Its example says a bike supplied in any month of 2022 permits another scheme purchase from 1 January 2026. This is not a requirement to wait 48 months from the exact handover day. Confirm your recorded participation year with payroll before placing an order.
Find a reliable purchase record
Start with the employer’s record, then keep your original quotation, order confirmation and vehicle details together. A faded shop receipt or a remembered summer holiday is a poor substitute for the tax year recorded by payroll. If your employment changed, explain the previous purchase to the new employer instead of assuming a fresh job resets the window.
For eligibility, spending ceilings and the employer purchase process, use Lifty’s Bike to Work hub alongside Revenue’s current official guidance. Your employer must purchase the bike; a personal purchase followed by reimbursement does not qualify.
Replace the problem rather than repeating it
Make a short list of what your existing bike does badly. Perhaps it is awkward on stairs, difficult to lock through the frame or uncomfortable for frequent stops. Choose the next bicycle around those tasks. Avoid upgrading merely because a motor number or a new colour looks impressive after midnight.
- Check the exact size and weight, including the battery.
- Confirm how the battery is removed and where it can be charged.
- Measure your storage space and lock attachment points.
- Check compatible tyres, brake parts and servicing support.
- Confirm the current price and availability before asking your employer to approve the quote.
Compare compact and trekking options
Compact wheels can help with limited storage; a conventional trekking format may better suit longer roads and luggage. Neither is automatically right for every rider. Use the current listing and manufacturer’s sizing guidance for the exact variant.
Complete the commuting setup
Choose a correctly fitting helmet and a substantial lock before optional gadgets. For regular Irish rain, we recommend asking about Lifty’s weatherproofing protection pack for your exact bike. It is an optional workshop treatment, not permission to immerse the bike or pressure-wash it, and it does not establish a new independently tested IP rating. Keep workshop services separate from the scheme estimate unless your employer confirms their treatment.
Close the paperwork loop
Get the approved purchasing route, deduction period and treatment of extra costs in writing. Once the bicycle is supplied, keep the new record somewhere you can find it. Your future self will appreciate a labelled folder considerably more than another mystery screenshot.
