Regulation Ready Electric Scooters: Ireland Compliance Checklist

Regulation ready electric scooters: what does it mean?

A regulation-ready electric scooter should fit the Irish requirements for low-power e-scooters and be practical to maintain in roadworthy condition. For public-road use, buyers should look beyond headline speed and focus on compliance, safety and support.

Irish buyer checklist

  • Maximum design speed of 20km/h or less.
  • Maximum continuous rated power of 400W or less.
  • Maximum weight of 25kg including batteries.
  • Front and rear lights, reflectors, brakes and an audible warning device.
  • Minimum wheel diameter and manufacturer plate requirements.
  • CE marking and Declaration of Conformity where applicable.

Lifty's Regulations Ready Electric Scooters collection is built to help buyers start in the right place. You can also compare commuter electric scooters if the scooter is mainly for work, college or city travel.

Compliance is not the only question

A legal scooter can still be a poor fit if it is too heavy, has weak brakes, lacks parts support, or is difficult to repair. Before buying, ask about tyres, brake pads, waterproofing, chargers and diagnostic support.

For the legal source, review S.I. 199 of 2024 and the RSA guidance.
