PDI Standards 24-Point Torque Check

Ninety percent of the broken electric scooters and e-bikes that arrive at Lifty Labs on Capel Street didn't fail because of manufacturing defects. They failed because of three easily preventable mistakes: neglected tyre pressure, unserviced brakes, and winter water ingress. Here is our master workshop guide to keeping your machine running like new.

As Chief Technician at Lifty Labs, I've disassembled everything from entry-level commuter scooters to 13,000-watt hyper-scooters and German Bosch carbon e-bikes. Electric mobility vehicles require specific maintenance protocols due to their high torque, road vibration, and lithium-ion electrical systems.

Rule 1: Tyre Pressure Is Non-Negotiable (The #1 Puncture Culprit)

Riders constantly come in saying: "I ran over glass on the quays!" In 8 out of 10 cases, there is no glass. What happened was a pinch flat caused by riding on under-inflated tyres.

When your tyre pressure drops below 35 PSI, hitting a Dublin pothole or kerb compresses the rubber tube directly against the metal rim, pinching two clean snake-bite holes into the inner tube.

Lifty Labs Pressure Benchmarks

  • Electric Scooters (8.5" to 11" Pneumatic/Tubeless): Check weekly. Maintain 45 to 50 PSI.
  • Electric Bikes (27.5" to 29" Commuter/MTB): Maintain 35 to 45 PSI depending on payload.
  • Pro Prevention Upgrade: Add 60ml of Kevlar tyre sealant inside inner tubes to automatically seal punctures up to 3mm on the fly.

Rule 2: Hydraulic Brake Care & Pad Wear

Stopping an electric bike or scooter travelling at speed puts immense thermal stress on your brake pads. Mechanical cable brakes stretch and require constant manual barrel adjustments. Hydraulic brakes (Shimano, Magura, Nutt) self-adjust, but require fluid discipline:

Check Item Frequency Warning Signs Action Required
Brake Pad Thickness Every 500km Grinding metal sound Replace immediately if <1mm remains
Hydraulic Fluid Bleed Annually / 2,000km Spongy levers pulling to grip Perform mineral oil or DOT flush
Rotor Alignment Monthly Rhythmic rubbing squeak True brake disc with rotor fork

Rule 3: Battery Longevity (The 20%–80% Storage Law)

Your lithium-ion battery pack is the single most expensive component on your machine (accounting for up to 50% of the vehicle's total value). Treat it with respect:

  • Never Store at 0%: If you store a scooter or e-bike in a shed at 0% battery over a cold Irish winter, the cells will undergo permanent copper shunt damage and fail to wake up in spring.
  • The 80% Sweet Spot: If you are not riding for more than two weeks, charge the battery to roughly 60% to 70% and store it indoors at room temperature (15°C – 20°C).
  • Cool Down Before Charging: Never plug your charger in immediately after a hard, fast ride. Let the battery cells stabilize in temperature for 30 minutes before charging.

Rule 4: Irish Weatherproofing & Water Ingress

Workshop Sealing Protocols

  • Never Pressure-Wash: High-pressure water easily penetrates hub motor axle seals, wheel bearings, and LCD display housings. Clean your frame with a damp cloth and mild bike cleaner.
  • Silicone Dielectric Grease: In Lifty Labs, we apply dielectric silicone grease to all multi-pin harness connectors to prevent corrosion from wet road salt.
  • Check Charging Port Flaps: Always ensure the rubber charging port plug is securely pressed shut before rolling out into the rain.

Rule 5: Stem Wobble & Torque Checks

Every folding scooter and bicycle undergoes repeated harmonic vibrations. Every 300km, take 5 minutes to check all primary structural bolts with a torque wrench:

  • Folding clamp collar bolts (tighten evenly in cross-pattern).
  • Handlebar stem clamp bolts.
  • Wheel axle nuts and motor retention brackets.
  • Suspension pivot bolts (use medium-strength blue threadlocker Loctite 243).
"Regular maintenance takes five minutes a week. Ignoring it will cost you a new battery or controller. Care for your machine, and it will take care of you on every commute."
